Chautauqua County legislators have approved it, but now a proposal to increase the county's sales tax rate must get through the State Legislature. And there are indications it may not be an easy sell. In an interview with WDOE News, Assemblyman Andy Goodell says part of the challenge is getting enough support for a tax increase.
Goodell-No guarantee it will pass
County lawmakers approved the proposed hike, from the current 7.5 percent rate to 8 percent, by a 14 to 4 vote. Goodell says if there is enough support in the State Legislature, another vote will be required by the Chautauqua County Legislature.

Goodell says it's difficult to gauge at this time whether there is enough support the proposed hike. County Executive Vince Horrigan is seeking the increase to help close a structural deficit in 2016 and to help lower the county's property tax rate.
