The legislation would professionalize the response to and reporting of sexual assaults that occur on campuses to better protect and empower survivors of campus sexual violence, while also protecting the rights of accused students. Gillibrand: incentive for colleges
Gillibrand, who spoke on Tuesday during a conference call with statewide media, says colleges who fail to comply with the law, if it is passed, could be fined up to 1% of their operating budget. They may also be subject to increased fines for every sexual assault that goes unreported. A total of 385 forcible sex offenses were reported on campuses in New York in 2013.
