House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy shocked the Republican caucus on Thursday by withdrawing his bid for the next Speaker of the House. McCarthy says he didn't have enough votes to lead, calling for the next Speaker to be a "fresh face" that unifies the old guard and new conservative faction in the Republican caucus. In a statement, local Congressman Tom Reed said, "I respect Kevin’s leadership and decision to withdraw. As we continue to listen to the American people, I believe this is an opportunity for a fresh face to unite us and lead America forward." No word on a new date for the election.
