Chautauqua County Executive Vince Horrigan has officially signed a recently-passed local law that prohibits the sale of personal care products containing microbeads in the county. The local law was initially introduced by County Legislator George Borrello of Silver Creek, and it was unanimously approved by the County Legislature during last month's meeting in Mayville. Dr. Sherri Mason, a local researcher at the State University of New York at Fredonia recently spoke about the problem of microbeads on WDOE's Viewpoint program. She says passing a local law will help with efforts in getting a statewide ban enacted.

The new law goes into effect next February. Anyone caught selling personal care products with microbeads may be fined up to $1,000 for the first violation and up to $2,500 for each subsequent violations for each day the violation occurs.
