The cooler air that brought an end to the August heat wave Sunday evening that has been gripping Western New York for the past several days also produced a startling sight on Lake Erie...waterspouts. The National Weather Service received multiple reports of waterspouts on Lake Erie from Ripley to the Dunkirk area. Here is a photo from local photographer Byron Rexford of one forming near Dunkirk Harbor. Waterspouts can damage small boats and should be avoided by boaters!
