Lady Billies Survive Defensive Struggle with Albion

The quarterfinal round of the Section VI high school basketball playoffs saw the Fredonia girls go on the road against Albion in the Class B-1 bracket. In a game broadcast on WDOE, the Lady Billies struggled at times to score against a stingy defense during Thursday night's contest, but they had enough to outlast the Lady Purple Eagles by a score of 35-29. Fredonia (10-12) led for most of the game, thanks to an early 12-0 run to maintain what seemed to be a comfortable lead throughout the first half. Katie Price scored five points in the 1st quarter, while Hannah Gullo scored seven of her eight points in the 2nd quarter to give the Billies a 19-11 lead at halftime. Albion (10-12) battled back in the 3rd quarter -- a couple of three-pointers in the period helped cut the Fredonia lead to one point. However, sophomore A'Cetta Farrait knocked down a triple of her own to close the quarter and give Fredonia a 28-24 lead entering the final quarter. The Purple Eagles were unable to get any closer. Price was the only player who scored in double figures for the game; the senior had 10 points to go with four rebounds and three assists. Farrait had eight points and 11 boards, and Gullo collected seven rebounds to go with her eight points. Albion's top performer was Caitlynn Snook, who had nine points.

Fredonia moves on to face top seed Newfane next Thursday in the Class B-1 semifinals at Kenmore West High School.
