Fredonia man dies in two-vehicle crash on Route 5

A crash involving a pickup truck and car on Route 5 near Van Buren Road in the town of Pomfret has claimed the life of a 91-year-old Fredonia man. State Police say a vehicle driven by Donald Thering had stopped at the intersection, then proceeded across the highway when he failed to yield to the truck driven by 29-year-old Matthew Coyle of Fredonia who was traveling west on Route 5. The pickup, that was towing a trailer, struck the side of Thering's vehicle. Thering was flown by Starflight to UPMC Hamot Medical Center in Erie, but later died. Route 5 was closed for a period of time from Berry to Wilbur Roads because of the crash. Crews from Fredonia, Brocton and Portland Fire assisted at the scene.
