Gloria "Gay" Burrows Sanderson, 87, died peacefully at home in Plantation, FL on April 25, 2013. She was born in Jamestown, NY on November 13, 1925 to Laura Waite and Elton Hiram Burrows.
Her family moved to Fredonia, NY, where Gloria graduated from Fredonia High School in 1943. In April 1946, she married Sanford "Sandy" J. Sanderson from Fredonia, NY. The couple moved to Knoxville, TN for Sanford to attend University of Tennessee. They returned to Fredonia, NY for a few years before moving permanently to Plantation, FL in 1958.
Gloria found a church home and strong faith at St. Benedict's Episcopal Church in Plantation. She was a member of St. Mary's Society, Directress of the Altar Guild, and a founding member of St. Lawrence Chapel a Day Shelter for the Homeless. Gloria was a strong advocate for mental health. Gloria loved reading, art, music and travel. She will be remembered for her kindness, generosity, perseverance and strength. Gloria was devoted to her children.
She is survived by Sandra (Lone Tree, CO), Steve (Deerfield Beach, FL), Jim (Plantation, FL), and Susan (Lauderhill, FL), as well as two grandchildren, Dana and Stephanie Sanderson.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated by the Rt. Rev. Dorsey Henderson at St. Benedict's Episcopal Church in Plantation at 3 p.m. on May 18, 2013. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to St. Lawrence Chapel (1698 Blount Road, Pompano Beach, FL 33069) or Hospice of Palm Beach and Broward Counties (5300 East Ave., West Palm Beach, FL 33407).
