Stanley J. Sliwa, age 85, of Dunkirk, NY passed away peacefully Sunday (April 13, 2014) surrounded by his loving family. He joins his loving wife of 61 years, Celine Zebraski Sliwa, who passed away Sept. 6, 2013. He was born June 18, 1928 in Niles, Illinois, the son of the late Stanislaus and Stephania Sliwa.
Growing up in the Chicago area, he was an avid Chicago Cubs fan who enjoyed watching his team.Mr. Sliwa was a retired bricklayer. He was a devout Catholic who attended Mass daily and was a parishioner of Blessed Mary Angela R.C. Parish - St. Hyacinth's Church. Dedicated to his family and faith, he ushered at the 7 a.m. Mass at St. Hyacinth's Church for over 50 years. He took special care and pride as the curator of St. Hyacinth's Cemetery for over 40 years. Active in his parish, he served as Past Bingo Committee Chairman as well as helping with the church lawn fetes.
He is survived by his children, Katherine Sliwa, Stanley (Flora) Sliwa, Sylvia (Andrew) LaCombe, James (Cynthia) Sliwa, John (Melanie) Sliwa and William (Lori) Sliwa; his loving grandchildren, Joseph (Robin) LaCombe, Matthew (Janine) Lacombe, Joseph (Renee) Sliwa, Bekki Sliwa, Elizabeth Sliwa, Nicholas (Jordan) Sliwa and Zachary Sliwa; and his loving great-grandchildren, Zachary, Carilene and Nicholas. Many nieces and nephews also survive. In addition to his parents and wife, he was predeceased by his twin sister, Rose and sisters Stephania, Josephine and Agnes; and brothers, Michael, Casimir, Dominic and Daniel Sliwa.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial which will be celebrated Wednesday, April 16, 2014 at 10 a.m. in Blessed Mary Angela R.C. Parish - St. Hyacinth's Church. Interment will follow in St. Hyacinth's Cemetery. Friends may call at the Newman Funeral Home Inc. from 4-7 p.m. today. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the St. Hyacinth's Cemetery Fund.
