Michael T. "Muzzy" Tofil

Michael T. "Muzzy" Tofil, age 87, of Dunkirk, NY, died Tuesday (Aug. 26, 2014) at the Absolut at Dunkirk.

He was born in Dunkirk on Aug. 30, 1926, the son of the late Stanley and Salomea (Kuznicki) Tofil.

A lifelong Dunkirk resident, Mr. Tofil was a retired maintenance supervisor for Plymouth Tube.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, serving from 1944-46 as a gunner with the Armed Merchant Marine. He served in the North Atlantic, South Pacific, Philippines, Russia and Europe. He was awarded the Asiatic-Pacific, the European Theater, the American Campaign and World War II Victory medals.

His hobbies included golf, playing cards and spending time with his grandchildren. He was recently honored by being selected as the 2014 Grand Marshal of the Memorial Day Parade.

Mr. Tofil was a member of Blessed Mary Angela R.C. Parish-St. Hyacinth's Church, the First Ward Falcon Club, Moniuszko Club, Polish Literary & Assembly Rooms (Dom Polski), Dunkirk Falcon Club, Dunkirk Veterans of World War II and the John T. Murray VFW Post 1017.

Surviving are his sons, John J. Tofil, Michael S. Tofil, both of Dunkirk, and Edward W. Tofil of Westfield, NY; his grandchildren, Ryan, Daniel, Laura and Alexis Tofil; his sisters, Genevieve "Jenny" (Edward) Wisniewski of Dunkirk and Joan Robertson of Skiatook, Oklahoma; his brother, Anthony "James" (Patricia) Tofil of Dunkirk; and his sisters-in-law, Caroline (the late Lorence) Tofil and Patricia (the late Richard) Kokocinski, both of Dunkirk. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Elizabeth J. (Kokocinski) Tofil, who died Oct. 2, 1999; seven brothers, Peter, Adelbert "George", Leo, Francis, Thomas, Joseph and Lorence Tofil; and two sisters, Sophie Sikora and Mary Tofil.

Funeral services will be held Friday morning at 9:15 from the Newman Funeral Home Inc. and at 10 o'clock from Blessed Mary Angela R.C. Parish - St. Hyacinth's Church. Private interment will be in St. Hyacinth's Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Thursday. Flowers gratefully declined. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to the Lakeshore Humane Society, 431 East Chestnut St., Dunkirk, NY 14048.
