Alfred L. Vercant, age 89, of Fredonia, N.Y., died Thursday September 11, 2014 at the Chautuaqua County Home. Born July 2, 1925 in Dunkirk, N.Y., he was the son of the late Alfred L. Vercant, Sr., and Lucille Knoll Vercant.
Alfred graduated from Fredonia High School in 1944 and also attended S.U.N.Y. Fredonia for one semester. He served three years during WW II in the United States Navy as an Aviation Machinist Mate 3rd Class and was also a Turret Gunner on a TBF. On August 1, 1947 he married the former Esther May Aldrich. They were married 58 years at the time of Esther’s death on August 9, 2005. He was the owner/operator of Vercant Trucking and worked the family farm, Crooked Brook Farms, Inc. in Fredonia. Alfred was a member of the North-South Skirmish Association, the 44th Regiment of the New York Volunteer Infantry and the 9th Regiment of the Volunteer Calvary Company K, and competed in Black Powder competition.
Alfred is survived by his 3 sons: Richard Alfred (Sue Ann) Vercant, Michael Louis (Debby), and Timothy Charles (Dorothy) Vercant; daughter-in-law Mary Lou Vercant; 9 grandchildren: Kerrie Ann (Bill) Underhill, Amy Marie Vercant, Carson James Vercant, Emily May Vercant, Michael (Christine) Derby- Cuadrado, Simon Peter Marcus (Danica) Cuadrado, Matthew Curtis (Josephine) Vercant, Danielle Elizabeth (Richard) Tenamore, and Rhiannon Leigh Vercant; 7 great-grandchildren and 2 great great-grandchildren; Also survived by 2 sisters-in-law: Sarah Aldrich (Late James) Lesch, and Mary Aldrich (Late William) Hurst, and several nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, Alfred is preceded in death by his son David Seth Vercant; also 3 sisters: Anna M. (the late Donald) Vercant Popkey, Virginia L. (the late Gordon) Albrecht Johnson, and Patricia J. (the late Jardine) Vercant Centner Graham.
