Richard J. Boorady

Richard J. Boorady, 86, of Dunkirk died Wednesday evening (Sept. 24, 2014) at Hamot Medical Center in Erie, Pa.

He was born Sept. 28, 1927 in Dunkirk, the son of the late Albert and Tamam (Mosey) Boorady.

A lifelong resident of Dunkirk, Mr. Boorady was a graduate of St. Mary's Academy.

He served in the U.S. Army Air Forces from 1945-47 during World Ward II.

An optician, Mr. Boorady worked with his brother, Edward, at Boorady Optical in Dunkirk for many years and was the proprietor of Boorady International.

He was a member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church and a Fourth Degree Member of the Knights of Columbus Council 929.

Richard was very active in the community. He was President of Home School Association at St. Mary's. He was a "Den Father"in the Dunkirk-based Boy Scouts. He was a member of the Lakeside Club.

Richard loved to travel with his family, and made many trips to Lebanon, with his wife Nohade. He also spent time in Switzerland, Brazil, Rome and Venezuela.

Survivors include his wife, Nohade (Asmar) Boorady, whom he married Jan. 2, 1961; six sons, Dr. Roy Boorady of Manhattan, Albert (Rebecca) Boorady of Erie, Pa., Charles (Karine) Boorady of Manhattan, Dr. Joseph (Theresa) Boorady of Mendham, N.J., Thomas (Jodelle) Boorady of Lincoln Park, N.J., and Andre (Kristina) Boorady of Fairfax, Va.; eight grandchildren, Justine, Luke, Nayla, Victoria, Marc, Chloe, Paul and Brianna; and several nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Norman, Frederick, Edward and Robert Boorady; and two sisters, Rebecca Boorady and Edna "Betty" Boorady.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial which will be celebrated Monday morning at 10 o'clock in St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church. Calling hours will be held Sunday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the McGraw-Kowal Funeral Home. Entombment will be in the Pieta Mausoleum of St. Mary's Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church or St. John Maron Church, 2040 Wehrle Drive, Williamsville, NY 14221.
