Aaron K. Smith, 47, of Fredonia died Friday morning (Sept. 26, 2014) at Brooks Memorial Hospital in Dunkirk following a courageous battle with cancer. He was born Oct. 12, 1966 in Dunkirk, the son of Galen Sr. and Joann (Tenamore) Smith of Dunkirk.
A lifelong Dunkirk-Fredonia resident, Aaron was a graduate of Dunkirk High School, Class of 1985. Mr. Smith was co-owner of Smith Construction Company in Dunkirk. He was a member of Dunkirk Moose Lodge 89, Kosciuszko Club and the Moniuszko Club. An avid New York Jets and Oakland Athletics fan, Aaron loved his cat, Gabby.
Besides his parents, he is survived by his wife of 21 years, Jackie (Giebner) Smith; one brother, Galen (Rhoada) Smith Jr. of Cassadaga; two sisters, Sheila (Ron) McWillson and Nicole (David) Welka, both of Dunkirk; three nephews, Michael, Joshua, and Matthew Edwards; and one niece, Courtney Smith. He is also survived by his in-laws, James Sr. and Sandra Giebner of Dunkirk; two sisters-in-law, Joanne (Jose) Giebner-Cornier and Jennifer Giebner, both of Fredonia; and one brother-in-law, James Giebner Jr., of Hamburg.
Funeral services will be held Monday evening at 7 o'clock in the McGraw-Kowal Funeral Home. The Rev. Daniel P. Walsh will officiate. Calling hours will be held Monday from 5-7 p.m., two hours prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Roswell Park Cancer Institute.
