Evelyn S. Warmbrodt, 88, of Dunkirk died Tuesday evening (Oct. 21, 2014) at home.
She was born in Dunkirk on November 28, 1925 and was a lifelong resident of the region.
Evelyn is survived by her loving husband, William "Bill" Warmbrodt; three children and six grandchildren: son Fred and wife Annie of Copley, OH and children Julie and Ian; daughter Sarah and her husband Bill of Reno, NV and children Kirssa and Stefan; and son Kurt and wife Lisa of Dunkirk and their children Lucy and Thomas.
She was preceded in death by her first child, son Kenneth "KW", who passed on more than 15 years ago.
Evelyn was a devoted and active member of her church, the 1st United Presbyterian Church in Dunkirk, as well as various civic organizations, including Peace and Justice, the Dunkirk Booster Club and others. Evelyn and Bill contributed generously to regional, national and international groups and charities.
Evelyn graduated from the Millard Fillmore School of Nursing in 1946 and worked in Buffalo and Dunkirk, and completed her career as an instructor of practical nursing in Jamestown. She was a strong supporter of the UB College of Nursing. Evelyn enjoyed her long retirement by golfing, playing bridge and traveling.
The always engaging Evelyn enjoyed the friendship of neighbors and innumerable people throughout the region and country. She will be remembered for her sincerity, hospitality, encouragement to others, and devotion to her family.
Visitation will be held at the McGraw-Kowal Funeral Home in Dunkirk on Thursday, October 23 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. She will be remembered by Pastor Wendy Heinz at the 1st United Presbyterian Church in Dunkirk on Friday, October 24 at 11 a.m. The service will be followed by burial at Forest Hill Cemetery in Fredonia. A celebration of her life will then be held at Shorewood Country Club from 1-3 p.m.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers or gifts, contributions be made in her name to the Dunkirk Free Library.
