Joan (Smith) Baker, of Fredonia, NY, died Tuesday January 20, 2015 at Brooks Memorial Hospital.
Joan was born in Mercer County, Pa., October 6, 1931 to the late Robert C. and Alice (Irwin) Smith.
She is survived by: her husband, William W. Baker. They were married June 10, 1955 in Franklin, Pa. In the fall of 1958, they moved to Fredonia, NY. Joan is also survived by a son, Brent W. Baker of Silver Creek and a daughter, Julie L. (Daniel) Alley: two grandsons, Thomas Alley and Henry Alley, and one granddaughter, Hannah Alley, of Tuscola, Texas: she is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
After high school, Joan began work as a radiologic x-ray technician at the Franklin, Pa. hospital. She advanced to chief x-ray technician. Joan stopped working shortly before the birth of her first child. She was employed in the F.S.A. bookstore at SUNY Fredonia from the late 1970s to the early 1990s. When she left she was manager of the trade book section of the store.
A longtime member of the Laona United Methodist Church, Joan served as a Sunday school teacher, church historian, choir member and on various committees over the years. She was a Past President of the PTA at the Wheelock School in Fredonia. She also worked with Literacy Volunteers. Joan had a great sense of humor and enjoyed spending time with family and friends.
Calls may be made Friday, January 23 from 2:00-4:00 PM and 7:00-9:00 PM at the Larson-Timko Funeral Home, 20 Central Ave., Fredonia. Funeral Services will be held at the Laona United Methodist Church, 9636 Wilson Road, Fredonia, Saturday, January 24 at 11:00 AM. Interment will be in Forest Hill Cemetery.
