Barbara Ann Shalkowski

Barbara Ann Shalkowski (Milani), age 80, of Dunkirk, N.Y., died Wednesday, January 21, 2015 at Brooks Memorial Hospital.

Barbara was born November 30, 1934 in Erie, Pa., to the late Oreste and Evelyn Stromenger Milani.

She is survived by her loving husband, Alfred Shalkowski; her children: Patricia L. Jackson (David) of Littleton, MA, Michael D. Maycock (Robin) of Randolph, NY, Gary A. Maycock of So. Dayton, NY, Gerald "Jay" A. Maycock (Amy) of Jamestown, NY, and Tracy E. Wysong (Jon) of Fredonia, NY; her grandchildren: April, Bradley, and Matthew Jackson; Michael, Marah, Mitchell and Mckenna Maycock; Sean and Ryan Wysong; two sisters: Patricia Carideo of Erie, PA, and Sally Ostrowski of Girard, PA and her brother, David Milani of Louisville, KY. Barbara is also survived by nieces and nephews.

Barbara's greatest joy in her life was her children, and even more importantly, her nine grandchildren. She spent many hours babysitting, talking and sharing with them and attending high school sporting events. She had a special bond with each of them and she spoiled them whenever she could.

During her life, Barbara worked as an administrative assistant, with the most gratifying time being her 24 years spent at Fredonia State University. There she made enduring friendships that have lasted well beyond her retirement.

Barbara decided that she would like to get a college education and so for fifteen years she attended classes and persevered until in 1987 she proudly received her bachelor's degree from Empire State.

Barbara was a member of The Gourmettes for 44 years. Each month the group prepared dishes of a specific theme to share and enjoy. Along with dinner came hours of joy and laughter and friendship. Her greatest joy was having one of her recipes selected for the newspaper article.

For over ten years, Barbara and Alfred volunteered for Meals on Wheels. Once a week they delivered food to homes throughout the area, and more importantly a few minutes of company, to those in need. They were named Volunteers of the Year in 2010.

Calls may be made Sunday, January 25 from 2:00-4:00 PM and 7:00-9:00 PM at the Larson-Timko Funeral Home, 20 Central Avenue, Fredonia, N.Y. where prayers will be offered Monday, January 26 at 9:15 AM, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at Holy Trinity Church at 10:00 AM.
