Walter S. Proper

Walter S. Proper, 88, of Fredonia died Saturday morning (May 16, 2015) at Fredonia Place following a brief illness.

He was born Jan. 30, 1927 in Fredonia, the son of the late Walter and Catherine (Szcerbacki) Paprocki.

A lifelong area resident, Mr. Proper served in the U.S. Navy during World War II from 1945 to 1946.

He earned a master's degree in education from Fredonia State College and had been employed as a science teacher at Lake Shore Central Junior High School in Angola for 36 years.

Mr. Proper was a member of Fredonia Beaver Club and Dunkirk Senior Citizen Center.

An avid outdoorsman, he was a great cook and also enjoyed gardening and reading.

Survivors include two daughters, Jill (Brian) Cummings of Salt Lake City, Utah and Jodee Cotey of Canton, NY; and four grandchildren, Jenna Cummings, Joshua Cummings, Alex Cotey, and Emily Cotey.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, JoAnne (Dispense) Proper; two brothers; and two sisters.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, May 19 at 11:00 AM in the McGraw-Kowal Funeral Home. The Rev. William Leslie will officiate. Military honors will be accorded by the Dunkirk Joint Veterans Council. Calling hours will be held Tuesday from 10:00-11:00 AM, one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in Forest Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice Chautauqua County, 20 W. Fairmount Avenue, Lakewood, NY 14750.
