Donald E. Merkt, 68, passed away Sunday, May 1, 2016 at the VA Hospital in Buffalo, NY. He was born August 1, 1947 in Buffalo, NY, the son of Gloria (Villa) Weimer, who survives.
Mr. Merkt was a U.S. Army veteran who served two tours of duty in Vietnam.
He was a self-employed plumbing and heating contractor since 1990. He was a member of the Gowanda American Legion Post #409 and Gowanda VFW Post #5007. He also was on the town of Dayton Planning Board.
On January 22, 1972, he married the former Anne Petersen, who survives.
Besides his loving wife of 44 years, he is survived by three daughters, Julie Merkt of Hamburg, NY, Christy Merkt of Rochester, NY and Ashley (Neeraj) Kumar of New Jersey; and two grandchildren, Tucker and Ellie. Also surviving are four brothers, Raymond (Helen) Merkt of Oklahoma, Wayne Weimer of Dallas, TX, Gary (Teresa) Weimer of West Richland, WA and Charles Weimer of Gowanda, NY; a sister, Cathy (John) Anderson of Quinton, VA; and several nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at a later date.
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or Buffalo VA Hospital Palliative Care.
