Rae Allison Bixby Newcombe

Rae Allison Bixby Newcombe, 92, of Academy Street, Mayville died Monday, May 16, 2016 at Absolut of Westfield following a brief illness. She was born August 14, 1923 in Jamestown, NY, the daughter of the late Clarence and Jane Dearing Bixby.

She was happy and proud to have lived in her family home for her entire life. Rae graduated from Mayville Central School in 1941.

Rae had worked at the Chautauqua County Courthouse for over 35 years in various positions. She spent the last 17 of those years as a Chautauqua County Court Officer, retiring in 1985. Rae was also a co-owner of the Mayville Bowladrome Bowling Alley in Mayville for 12 years.

She was a member of the Mayville American Legion Auxiliary, and had held many of the offices and positions at the Auxiliary for several years. She had been a volunteer for the Board of Elections, and also volunteered at Westfield Memorial Hospital as a grey lady.

Rae enjoyed bowling and had bowled in the Mayville Bowling League. She was an avid gardener, reader, and enjoyed watching NASCAR races in her later years. She also enjoyed spending time with her family and attending all of her granddaughters events, and her yearly Conneaut Lake, PA trips.

She is survived by a son, Joe B. Newcombe of Mayville; a daughter, Mindi R. (Jeffrey) Guest of Westfield; and two granddaughters, Erin R. Guest and Kathryn C. Guest both of Westfield. She was preceded in death by her husband, George A. “Joe” Newcombe, whom she married on October 29, 1949 on the grounds of Chautauqua Institution with their reception at the St. Elmo, and who died April 16, 1963.

The funeral service will be held at 7:00 PM Thursday, May 19 at the Freay Funeral Home in Mayville. Rev. Ivy Gauvin will officiate. Burial will be in the Mayville Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5:00-7:00 PM prior to the funeral service on Thursday at the funeral home.
