Martha M. Haas

Martha M. Haas, 95, formerly of West Lake Road, Dunkirk and Castile Drive, Fredonia, passed away Wednesday, April 18, 2018 at the Chautauqua Nursing and Rehab Center with her daughters by her side. She was born on March 19, 1923 to the late Lyman and Alice Elliott Fisher.

She was a homemaker, the Avon Lady for the West Town of Dunkirk and was a child care giver for several local families. She had served as president of School 5 PTA and was active in Girl Scouts and the American Field Service, her family hosting an exchange student in 1963. She was an active member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Chadwick Bay Garden Club and Share and Care Senior Citizens of Fredonia until her illness.

Her family was her life, and she was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

She is survived by her three daughters, Deborah (Robert) Illig of Jamestown, Janice (Robert) Moch of Tyler, TX and Christine (Paul) Switzer of Dunkirk. Also surviving are seven grandchildren, Karen (James) Pax of Grand Island, Curtis (Melissa) Illig of Raleigh, NC, Christine (Jay) Knight and David (Annie) Moch of Tyler, TX, Laura (Charles) Wando of Kampala, Uganda, and Douglas (Ashley) Switzer and Jeffrey Switzer of Fredonia; and 13 great-grandchildren, Aidan and Reagan Pax, Isabella, Samantha and Alex Illig, Zoe and Sofia Knight, Sasha and Nikolai Wando, Levi and Lyric Moch and Mason and Jaxson Switzer. Also surviving are two nieces and one nephew. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Earl W. Haas, whom she married on September 19, 1942 and who died on August 20, 1986; and one great-granddaughter, Ava Faith Knight, who died on September 20, 2010.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, April 22 at 2 p.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 334 Temple Street, Fredonia.

The family would like to thank the staff on Nursing Unit 1B at the Chautauqua Nursing and Rehab Center for their compassionate care given to our mother over the past several years.
