A New York State Thruway Authority maintenance worker died after getting struck by a vehicle on I-90 westbound in the Town of Hanover on Monday. State Police responded to the scene just east of Exit 58 at about 8:00 AM. Troopers say a preliminary investigation determined that the vehicle struck the worker while he was outside the NYSTA vehicle. The State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit and the Bureau of Criminal Investigation are on scene, and the Thruway Authority is assisting in this investigation. More information will be released at a later time.
Governor Kathy Hochul released a statement regarding Monday's incident. It reads in part:
We are heartbroken over the devastating death of a dedicated public servant, and my prayers go out to his family, friends and fellow co-workers during this difficult time. Roadside workers risk their lives every day to ensure the safety of all drivers on the road and they deserve our utmost attention at all times. This is the second fatality involving a Thruway maintenance worker this year and it is a serious reminder to slow down, safely move over and be alert for all vehicles stopped on the side of the road.
