A Fredonia man faces several drug-related charges after he was taken into custody in Dunkirk on Wednesday. Dunkirk Police saw 28-year-old Dakota Cordell, who had a confirmed warrant from the Chautauqua County Sheriff's Office, in a vehicle in the area of East 5th Street and Park Avenue at about 4:30 PM. As officers apprehended him, they saw suspected narcotics and drug paraphernalia in plain view inside the vehicle. Cordell allegedly tried to grab those items and discard them, and he had to be restrained by an officer. Police say a further search of the vehicle and Cordell led to the discovery and seizure of approximately 7.8 grams of suspected fentanyl, 1.7 grams of suspected methamphetamine, a large amount of powder that was unable to be identfied, packaging material, scales, and a considerable amount of cash. All items located were consistent with street-level narcotics sales. Cordell was taken to Dunkirk Police headquarters and arraigned in Dunkirk City Court. He is charged with 3rd-, 4th- and 5th-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, two counts of 7th-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, tampering with physical evidence, and 2nd-degree criminally using drug paraphernalia. Cordell was later released on his own recognizance and turned over to the Chautauqua County Sheriff's Office on his outstanding warrant. He is being held in the County Jail.
