
Impressive academic credentials and campus engagement are traits shared by SUNY Fredonia's recipients of the SUNY Chancellor's Award for Student Excellence. Two students at the university -- Sivan Adler and Alexander Scalcione -- were among the 205 students across the SUNY system honored a recent award ceremony in Albany.
Adler, an Albany resident who is May candidate for concurrent degrees -- including a BFA in acting and a BA in ethnic and gender studies -- has held leadership positions in student clubs, an academic fraternity and a campus office. These include chair (Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Advisory Council), president (Students Teaching Equals Positive Sexuality), secretary (Random Acts improv team), and vice president and secretary (campus chapter of Alpha Psi Omega, the national dramatic society in theatre arts). Individual honors received by Adler -- who has a minor in English -- include the Transfer Student, Paul F. and Mary Joyce Schaefer Endowment and Mac Nelson scholarships and the Bruce Walford, Bea Ullman, Dr. Kurt and Sibylla Sonnenfeld Memorial Fund and McVicker Ethnic and Gender Studies Scholar-Activism awards. Adler is also enrolled in the Honors Program. Adler has served as a Fredonia campus tour guide, a theater camp counselor in Troy, and a receptionist at a senior assisted living community in Albany.
Scalcione of Endicott is a computer science major who is earning a BS degree. He has immersed himself in computer science, Internet technology and software development experiences, both on campus and elsewhere. In addition to his computer science major, Scalcione has minors in data science, web development, and statistics. Internet technology positions he's held on campus include computer lab proctor, instructional documentation and development intern, and cybersecurity technician. Scalcione has served as a computer science tutor and teacher assistant on campus and a summer enrichment instructor at the high school level. Scalcione has also served as a data analytics/data science intern with Avangrid, a leading sustainable energy company, and as a software development extern with human resources firm Paychex. Projects he's worked on include predictive modeling of NFL event outcomes using contextual data, photo synthesis AI-based web application with integrated databases and trading card marketplace web app with integrated database. Scalcione is skilled in programming languages that include R, Python, PySpark, C++, C#, SQL, JavaScript, Assembly, HTML, CSS, and PHP. On campus, Scalcione has served as an orientation leader in the Office of Retention and Academic Success and tour guide/junior counselor in Admissions. Scalcione has received the President's Award for Excellence. He was named a Presidential Scholar for Math and Science and a Keeper of the Dream Scholar and was awarded an Arthur Maytum Scholarship. He also has a minor in communication.
