A U.S. Army veteran from Dunkirk has become the first Chautauqua County resident to receive a veterans peddler's permit. That's according to County Clerk Greg Carlson, who says Kenneth DeLong was issued permit No. 0001 in the county. Kenneth's son, Zakery, called the County Clerk's Office inquiring about the permit on his father's behalf. Carlson says it's something the office had not come across before, but after researching New York State General Business Law, the Clerk's Office discovered it was something it was authorized to issue to certain veterans who have been a resident of the county for at least six months. According to state law, a veterans peddler's permit provides veterans and surviving spouses with the right to peddle, vend, and sell goods, wares or merchandise, or solicit trade on the highways within a specific jurisdiction without paying typical municipal fees.
