Law enforcement agencies across New York have begun their annual enforcement effort that focuses on motorists who are not wearing seatbelts or who are wearing them incorrectly. The Governor's Traffic Safety Committee (GTSC) says the "Buckle Up New York, Click It or Ticket" campaign runs now through Sunday, May 31st. The initiative will also involve officers looking out for vehicles where children are not properly restrained. According to data from the Institute for Traffic Safety Management and Research (ITSMR), 35% of fatal crashes that occurred in 2024 involved unrestrained occupants. And 46% of backseat passenger fatalities occurred when those passengers were unrestrained.
