Fredonia High School's quest for a fifth consecutive Section VI softball championship got off on the right foot Tuesday afternoon. In a game broadcast on WDOE, the Lady Billies cruised to a 14-2, five-inning victory over visiting JFK in the Class B prequarterfinals.
After a scoreless 1st inning, Fredonia (15-3) tallied four runs in the bottom of the 2nd, all with two out. Freshman McKella Hodkin's skied a two-run single to get her team on the board before she and Naomi Muck crossed the plate with some aggressive base running. JFK (3-14) got one run back in the top of the 3rd inning, but Fredonia answered with five more runs in the bottom of the 3rd, with extra-base hits by Ava Muck and Jenna Fryberger highlighting that spurt. With the score 10-2 entering the bottom of the 5th, the Lady Billies put up four more runs; an infield single by Ava Muck drove home the run that ended the contest via the mercy rule.
Ava Muck led Fredonia at the dish with a 2-for-3 hitting performance; she and McKella Hodkin each had two RBI in the win. Hodkin was also the winning pitcher with one earned run allowed on one hit, three walks and nine strikeouts.
Fredonia moves on to face Roy-Hart in the Class B quarterfinals on Thursday at 5:00 PM.
