With the world's largest steam locomotive scheduled to travel through Chautauqua County on Tuesday, county and local leaders are urging the public to prioritize safety and plan ahead for travel delays and increased traffic. Union Pacific's Big Boy No. 4014 is scheduled to make a whistle-stop at the State Street crossing in Ripley at about 12:00 PM, then depart at 12:30 PM. Officials anticipate a large turnout of rail enthusiasts, families, photographers, and visitors hoping to witness the massive locomotive in action.
Residents who plan to watch from communities such as Westfield, Brocton, Dunkirk, Silver Creek or elsewhere along the route are asked to do the following:
- Stay on public property
- Remain well back from railroad tracks
- Never stand on or walk along the tracks
- Obey all railroad crossings and warning devices
- Supervise children closely
- Be alert for railroad operations at all times
Big Boy No. 4014 will be traveling north on the south track after departing Ripley. A live stream of the locomotive's arrival will also be available here.
