Langworthy Praises House's Passage of Anti-Fraud Legislation

The House has approved a package of 11 bills aimed at reducing fraud in federal programs, and that action has drawn praise from the Southern Tier's representative. During a video conference call with reporters this week, Congressman Nick Langworthy said the legislation followed extensive investigations by the House Oversight Committee, which he is on. According to Langworthy, fraud scandals in Minnesota have "lifted the veil" on the extent of the problem. He says what happened in that state is not an isolated incident...

Langworthy pointed out that the federal government loses an estimated $233 billion to $521 billion annually to fraud. He also highlighted a 2022 audit that identified nearly $1 billion in Medicaid billing errors and improper payments in New York. The Western New York Republican says the package of legislation includes the Fraud Prevention and Accountability Act, which would make anti-fraud data analytics and investigative tools developed during the pandemic permanent...

The package also includes measures allowing the U.S. Treasury to flag suspicious payments before taxpayer dollars are disbursed, and strengthen identity verification requirements for federal student aid programs to prevent scammers from using stolen or fraudulent identities to collect taxpayer-funded financial assistance intended for legitimate students. The legislation awaits action in the Senate.
