A new historical marker commemorating a rally in support of President Ulysses S. Grant was unveiled this week in Clymer. Local officials, historians and community members, along with state lawmakers George Borrello and Andrew Molitor, were on hand for the dedication. An estimated 1,500 to 2,000 people gathered in the community on July 17, 1872 for what was described as a "grand Republican rally" for Grant. According to Borrello, that turnout "reflected the engagement and patriotism of the people who call this region home" at a time when travel was more difficult compared to today.
