Earlysummer is when black bears are most active in New York. One recent example of a bear sighting happened in Forestville last Monday, with a resident's Ring camera catching footage of a bear wandering across their property. According to the State DEC, black bears spend a great deal of time exploring for food, which can lead to encounters with humans. The DEC advises residents not to feed bears, stating that if an encounter with a human doesn't result in a reward, they will not have any reason to have contact with humans. The agency adds that when bears learn to obtain food from humans, they can become bold and aggressive. Also, deliberate and intentional feeding of bears is illegal in New York.
