The average price at the gas pump has dropped over the past week amid optimism that the Strait of Hormuz will resume normal operations. According to AAA, Monday's nationwide average price per gallon is $4.01, which is down nearly nine cents compared to a week ago. New York State is averaging $4.16, a decline of almost six cents. In Chautauqua County, the average has dropped a little over two cents to $4.26. One year ago, the national and state averages were $3.14 and $3.17, respectively.
As of Monday morning, crude oil prices were down in the $70s to low $80s per barrel. AAA adds that half of all U.S. states are currently paying below $4.00 per gallon on average. Gas prices typically start going down at this time of year, as many schools and universities begin fall semesters, and fewer people are taking road trips compared to earlier this summer.
