The backups on the Buffalo Bills who are battling for final roster spots made a good final impression Thursday night in the team's third and final preseason game. The Bills, who did not play from behind in either of their first two contests, trailed for much of this game against the Pittsburgh Steelers at the new Highmark Stadium. But Buffalo rallied from a 10-point deficit in the 4th quarter to edge the Steelers 28-27 to complete a perfect preseason.
Buffalo fell behind 14-3 in the 1st quarter before closing the gap to 14-10 on a Frank Gore touchdown run in the 2nd quarter. After a Pittsburgh touchdown in the 3rd quarter, the Bills answered with a 28-yard touchdown run by rookie Skyler Bell. Down 27-17 in the 4th quarter, Buffalo put together a pair of scoring drives to pull out the victory. Tyler Bass connected on a 42-yard field goal to close the gap to seven points. On their Bills' next drive, a 40-yard pass interference penalty set them up inside the 10-yard line. Three plays later, Ian Wheeler's touchdown run made it a one-point game with 1:06 remaining, then Dante Pettis caught a pass for the go-ahead two-point conversion.
In addition to his touchdown run, Skyler Bell caught seven balls for 49 yards in his Bills debut. Quarterback Shane Buechele, who played the entire game, threw for 196 yards on 26-for-38 passing. Defensively, the Bills registered three sacks and an interception.
The Bills will now turn their attention to the regular season. Their opener will be on Sunday, September 13th at the Houston Texans.
