County Passes Law Requiring Motorists to Keep Three-Foot Distance When Passing Non-Motorists

The Chautauqua County Legislature recently approved a local law requiring motor vehicle operators to maintain a "safe space" of three feet when overtaking non-motorized vehicles and pedestrians. Lawmakers approved the measure, known as the Chautauqua County Safe Passing Law, by a 17-1 vote after some discussion during their monthly meeting in August. Quattrone also noted that his deputies are fully aware of laws regarding motorized and non-motorized vehicles. However, he says sometimes they don't have the resources to deal with every violation. Under the new law, violators will be subject to a fine of up to $225 for a first offense, up to $325 for a second offense, and up to $425 for any subsequent offenses.
