Back-to-back wins at home allowed Fredonia to enter the second half of the high school football season in one of the four playoff positions in Class C South. However, the Hillbillies' trip to the Jamestown area Friday night brought them back down to earth and outside the top four in the division. In a game broadcast on WDOE, the Billies fell to Southwestern-Frewsburg by a 36-7 score at Charles Lawson Field, which also marked the first win of the season for the home team.
Southwestern-Frewsburg (1-4, 1-3) grabbed the lead five plays into the contest when quarterback Drake Beckstrom ran for a 59-yard touchdown. That advantage grew to 14-0 when Miles Torres intercepted a Noah Palisin pass and returned it 13 yards for a score. Fredonia (3-2, 2-2) responded with a six-play scoring drive that ended when Ayden Wronski ran 41 yards for a touchdown. The score remained 14-7 into the 3rd quarter, when the Billies were given a golden opportunity to tie the game with a drive start at the Southwestern-Frewsburg 26-yard line. They drove inside the 10, but turned the ball over on a fumbled snap. It proved to be the game's pivotal moment. Southwestern-Frewsburg drove 93 yards in 10 plays, capped by a 34-yard touchdown pass from Beckstrom to Joe Sirianni to make the score 22-7 early in the 4th quarter. Fredonia's ensuing drive was short-lived, as Torres picked off Palisin for a second time. Three plays later, Connor Campion burst through for a 62-yard touchdown run. The Billies committed two more turnovers in the quarter, and Southwestern-Frewsburg punctuated its triumph when Torres found the end zone on a 21-yard run.
Southwestern-Frewsburg racked up 260 rushing yards, with Drake Beckstrom accounting for 106 of those yards on 17 carries. Miles Torres added 77 yards on the ground, came up with three takeaways, and scored a pair of two-point conversions. For Fredonia, Ayden Wronski ran 18 times for 115 yards to go with his touchdown.
