HS Football: Dunkirk Falls to Olean, Fredonia Struggles at Portville

For the first time this high school football season, Dunkirk fans had something to cheer about at home, as the Marauders scored three touchdowns Friday night. However, it wasn't nearly enough for them to overcome a myriad of early miscues. In a game broadcast on WDOE, the Marauders dug themselves an early hole against Class B-2 rival Olean and lost by a 41-18 score at Karl Hoeppner Field.

In the first half, two turnovers and mistakes on special teams -- including a bad snap on a punt and a penalty at the end of a long punt return -- allowed Olean (2-4, 2-3) to start five drives inside the Dunkirk 20-yard line. Four of those drives produced rushing touchdowns for the Huskies -- three by quarterback Dominik Myers and one by Colby Booth. Olean led 27-0 at halftime, and that advantage stretched to 34-0 when Booth returned an interception for a touchdown late in the 3rd quarter. Dunkirk (1-5, 1-5) got on the board in the 4th quarter when Xavier Boland completed a 16-yard touchdown pass to Jordan Thomas-Smith. Just over three minutes later, Boland threw another touchdown, finding Octavies Texidor on a 51-yard strike. Olean soon quieted the Marauder faithful when Myers took off on a 64-yard touchdown run, his fourth of the night. On the ensuing kickoff, the Marauders went into their bag of tricks and pulled off a play reminiscent of the Music City Miracle. Timothy Warrior fielded the kick and lateraled across the field to Thomas-Smith, who eluded several defenders and raced 80 yards for his second touchdown of the game. That proved to be the last excitement of the night. With 2:16 remaining, the game was called after Warrior suffered a neck injury while attempting to block a punt.

Also on Friday, Fredonia saw its playoff chances in Class C take another blow, as the Billies got routed on the road by Portville, 37-6. The lone touchdown of the game for Fredonia came courtesy of Lavonce Donaldson in the 2nd quarter.
