Government officials at the county and state levels have been celebrating National 4-H week, which wrapped up on Saturday. During the Chautauqua County Legislature's monthly meeting in September, lawmakers passed a resolution commemorating 4-H Week and the county's 4-H program, with legislators Fred Johnson of Westfield and Tom Nelson of Jamestown declaring it "4-H Week" in the county. State Senator George Borrello issued a similar proclamation to "encourage all citizens to recognize and celebrate the positive impact of the 4-H programs." Borrello recently stopped at the Cornell Cooperative Extension office to grind apples and make cider with the 4-H staff.
National 4-H Week is the first week that children ages 5-19 can join 4-H. Through 4-H clubs and projects, children can learn sewing, carpentry, leathercraft, ceramics and more. Some raise rabbits, dogs, hogs and other animals, but some learn the everyday skills that help them become competent adults.
