JCC Marks One Year of Rooftop Solar Project with Jamestown BPU

In its first year of operation, a rooftop solar project at Jamestown Community College has generated more than 301,000 kilowatt-hours of emissions-free electricity, enough to power more than 31 average homes for a year. The project, a partnership with the Jamestown Board of Public Utilities, features 495 solar panels atop JCC's Hamilton Collegiate Center. The panels have been in operation since September 2025. The BPU reported that during the sunnier summer months, the panels produced enough energy to power 50 homes.

JCC President Daniel DeMarte says, "This project demonstrates how partnerships can make a meaningful difference in building a more sustainable future. We're proud to work with the Jamestown Board of Public Utilities to support renewable energy in our community while creating opportunities for our students to learn about emerging technologies."

The JCC rooftop solar project and similar BPU-led initiatives in the Jamestown community support New York State's Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act. The law calls for a 40% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions from 1990 levels by 2030 and an 85% reduction by 2050, with the goal of achieving net-zero emissions across the state’s economy.

Jamestown BPU General Manager Kris Sellstrom says, "The successful installation and operation of this solar project shows how local partnerships can benefit Jamestown while aligning with New York State climate energy goals. The Jamestown BPU appreciates the support and enthusiasm that JCC showed to help make this project a reality."
