Leonard J. Szalkowski, 87, of Dunkirk died on Thursday, February 12, 2026. He was born on April 18, 1938 to the late Joseph and Florence (Gawronski) Szalkowski.
Leonard graduated from Dunkirk Industrial High School and then joined the U.S. Marines. Leonard married the love of his life, Sally Apthorpe on November 3, 1962. He worked at True Temper until its closing, and he was a great cook and woodworker, with his family benefiting from many of his beautiful pieces.
Leonard is survived by his daughters, Rebecca (Robert) Eckstrom and Lynn (Cliff) Pearce; his sons, Carl Szalkowski and Lee (Jennifer) Szalkowki; grandchildren, Alicia (Jake) Green, Nathan (Kayleigh) Eckstrom, Luke (Sara) Eckstrom, Nicholas (Heather) Eckstrom, Jordan (Evelyn) Eckstrom, Elijah (Maggie) Eckstrom, Kristen (Erik) Nixon, Megan (Ermin) Sabljakovic, Andrea Perry, Brandon Perry, Laura Szalkowski, Cody, Katelyn and Mikayla Falkner; great-grandchildren, Avery, Aria, Arabella Green, Landon, Raegan, Addison, Eckstrom, Tristan, Greyson Eckstrom, Lucian, Lorelai, Lochlann, Lennox Eckstrom, Elliott and Theodore Eckstrom, Preston, Kaleb and Logan Nixon, Eli Sabljakovic, William, Ella and Isabella Falkner; and a great-great-granddaughter, Maia Nixon. In addition to his parents, Leonard is preceded in death by his wife, Sally; his sisterm Mary Jane Campese; and a granddaughter, Nicole Eckstrom.
Funeral services will be held in private at the convenience of the family.
