James C. Giebner, Sr.

James C. Giebner, Sr., 80, of Dunkirk passed away peacefully Tuesday morning, February 24, 2026 at Brooks Memorial Hospital with his loving children by his side. Born in Dunkirk on April 8, 1945, he was the husband of the late Sandra J. (Gillespie) Giebner and son of the late Donald and Winifred (Tilley) Giebner.

After graduating from Dunkirk High School in 1963, where he was voted the most attractive and showcased his athletic talents on the baseball and football fields, James joined the Marine Corps and served during the Vietnam War from 1964-1968, achieving the rank of Lance Corporal. It was during his time stationed in Oceanside, CA that he met the love of his life, Sandra. Their union would be a cornerstone of his life, and together, they built a family that he was immensely proud of.

He furthered his education at Jamestown Community College, earning an Associate's degree, followed by a Bachelor's degree from Fredonia State.

James retired as the Superintendent of the Department of Public Works in the City of Dunkirk, where he contributed many years of hard work and leadership. His involvement with the department included the initiation of new services that benefited the community, a reflection of his commitment to public service.

Beyond his career, James was a man of many interests and talents. He was very handy and found joy in woodworking after retirement. A food enthusiast, he showcased his culinary talents, delighting family and friends alike with his cooking. He also enjoyed spending time at casinos with his wife, going on daily bicycle rides, and he eagerly looked forward to his annual military reunion, which would be held in different locations across America.

James also nurtured a love for boxing, inspired by his admiration for Muhammad Ali. Notably, he created unforgettable memories by taking his children to Ali's training camps in Deer Lake, PA, where they even shared breakfast with the boxing legend.

Jim was known for his tough exterior but unparalleled tenderness and love for his family, whom he supported wholeheartedly. His love for his family was paramount, and he took immense pride in the accomplishments of his children. A man of great intelligence, James was thorough in his pursuits, researching meticulously before committing to any endeavor.

James' family would like to extend a sincere thank you to the staff at Brooks Memorial Hospital for their exceptional care of Sandra and James.

Survivors include his loving children, Jacqueline (late Aaron) Smith, Joanne (Jose) Giebner-Cornier, Jennifer Giebner-Donato and James C.(Alisha) Giebner, Jr.; and his grandchildren, Jordan and Jamison Giebner. In addition to his parents, James is preceded in death by his loving wife of 58 years, Sandra J. (Gillespie) Giebner, who passed away on February 13, 2026; siblings, Nancy VanMarte, Donald Giebner and Ronald Giebner; and his beloved canine companion, Deion.

Funeral services were held in private at the convenience of the family. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
