Donald A. Russo, 79, of Buffalo, formerly of Dunkirk, passed away peacefully following a brief illness on Saturday, March 7, 2026 with his loving family by his side at Buffalo General Hospital. Born in Dunkirk on December 19, 1946, he was the son of the late Anthony and Yolande (Perret) Russo.
Donald was a proud graduate of Dunkirk High School. He served honorably in the United States Air Force from 1966-1969. Following his military service, Donald enjoyed a long and fulfilling career, retiring from Al Tech Specialty Steel after 37 years.
A devout Catholic, Donald embraced his faith throughout his life, which deeply influenced his values and his interactions with others. He was known for his honesty and caring nature; he was the type of person who would go out of his way to help anyone in need. Donald cherished his family above all else, and his proudest accomplishments were his daughters, with whom he loved spending quality time. He particularly enjoyed his moments with them and his grandchildren.
He was an avid Buffalo Bills fan and enjoyed talking with his brother Dave during games.
Don is survived by his partner, Christine Williams; loving daughters, Charity (Charles) Taber and Brooke (Daniel Hamlet) Russo; grandchildren, Dion and Olivia Plaza, Caden Hamlet, Shayn Grisanti and Chelsea Taber; great-grandson, Ayden Taber and a great-granddaughter on the way; siblings, Ronald (Katherine) Russo, David (Denise) Russo and Kathleen (Daniel) Valvo; and many nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are welcome to attend calling hours on Thursday, March 12 from 4:00-7:00 PM at the McGraw-Kowal Funeral Home, 736 Central Avenue in Dunkirk. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, March 13 at 10:00 AM at Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church, 1032 Central Avenue in Dunkirk. Military Honors will be held by the Dunkirk Joint Veterans Council immediately following the Mass. Interment will be held in Holy Trinity Cemetery.
