Saturday Sports Update
There's always plenty of intensity in a Dunkirk-Fredonia rivalry game, and that was on display from the players and the crowd during Friday night's boys high school basketball game in Dunkirk. However, the night belonged to Fredonia in a 59-30 win, which snapped a four-game losing streak for the Hillbillies against their crosstown rivals. Tyler Putney (top left) helped lead a balanced scoring attack for Fredonia, as he knocked down three three-pointers en route to a 14-point effort. Freshman Nick Whitfield provided some rim protection early on by blocking a Tywon Wright layup (top right). The Marauders have a young varsity team this year; their top scorer, Earl Stewart (bottom left), scored 11 points on the night and is averaging 15.4 points per game through his team's first five games. Friday night's contest was the first rivalry game as head coaches for Fredonia's Nick Bertrando and Dunkirk's Luke Gullo (bottom right). Photos by Ron Szot
