Sunday Sports Update

Top left: What can (Ronald) Brown do for you?  Well, we certainly know what he can do for Brocton High School, and he did plenty of it in Saturday's New York State Class D Far West Regional game in Batavia.  Honeoye batters went down like flies when Brown was on the hill; the senior recorded 18 strikeouts in Brocton's 6-4 victory.  And if that wasn't enough, "Bubba" Brown also went 3-for-4 at the plate, including an RBI single to cap a four-run 5th inning.  Brocton will play against Section X school Lisbon in the Class D state semifinals in Binghamton on Friday.  Photo by the Observer

Top right: Buffalo Sabres fans breathed a sigh of relief when they found out that Jeff Skinner would be staying in Buffalo for another eight years.  On Saturday, one day after agreeing to that $72 million deal, Skinner issued an open letter to Sabres fans on Sabres.com, stating in part, "I'm grateful that the Sabres believe in me, and that I get to stay and be around all the same people, from my teammates, to the staff, to the fans in Buffalo."  Photo by the Buffalo Sabres

Bottom left: No one can seem to stop the King of Clay at the French Open!  Today, Rafael Nadal won his record 12th championship on the red dirt of Roland Garros, defeating Dominic Thiem 6-3, 5-7, 6-1, 6-1.  Image by NBC Sports

Bottom right: Two local athletes took home top five finishes at the New York State High School Track and Field Championships on Saturday.  Dunkirk's Jericha Petrella (left) finished in second place in the 400m dash, breaking her own school record with a run of 57.55 seconds.  Fredonia's Emily Brown (right) finished in fifth place in the 2000m steeplechase with a time of 7:05.30, breaking her own personal best.  Photos from the Observer
