Saturday Sports Update
Top: Two running backs helped make the 2019 edition of the Dunkirk-Fredonia high school football rivalry game a memorable one. Fredonia's Dalton Gardner (left) grabbed the spotlight, becoming the first Fredonia player in five years to score five touchdowns in one game. Gardner's outstanding performance included 318 rushing yards and 81 receiving yards to go with his five TDs. Meanwhile, Dunkirk's workhorse, Christian Ortiz (right), carried his team on his back as much as he could, rushing for 250 yards and two scores. Fredonia won 45-16, giving the Billies 19 wins in the last 21 meetings. Photos by Ron Szot
Bottom: The New York Yankees still have a faint pulse when it comes to their chances of reaching the World Series. On Friday, the Bronx Bombers defeated the Houston Astros 4-1 in Game 5 of the ALCS, with Aaron Hicks (left) lining a three-run homer off the pole in right field and James Paxton (right), allowing one run on four hits in six innings.
