Top left: Missing live sports? Look to the UFC to deliver, as the coronavirus pandemic continues. On Saturday, the UFC hosted the first competitive professional sporting event in the United States since the COVID-19 breakout began, with UFC 249 in Jacksonville, Florida. The event was held without any fans in attendance. Highlighting the night of mixed martial arts was Justin Gaethje defeating Tony Ferguson by TKO in the 5th round to claim the UFC interim lightweight title. Photo by USA Today
Top right: Another sporting event this year that may be held without any fans is the French Open. That's according to Bernard Giudicelli, the President of the French Tennis Federation. The annual Grand Slam tennis event on the red clay is normally scheduled to begin in late May, but due to COVID-19, it has been postponed until September 20th. Photo by USA Today
Bottom left: The NFL recently sent a memo to all 32 teams that laid out protocols for the gradual reopening of team facilities. The league wants teams to be ready to implement the first phase of that plan by Friday, May 15th. Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin, who spoke with reporters on a conference call Saturday, said it is important for all teams to start at the same time for competitive fairness. Bottom right: Panama High School girls basketball head coach Jeff Angeletti recently announced that he is leaving the program after six seasons. Under Angeletti, Panama was one of the most successful girls basketball programs in New York State.
