Saturday Sports Update

Top left: This is the opening week of the 2021 high school football season, with most teams in Chautauqua County scheduled to take the gridiron today.  Jamestown was one of the few teams in the county in action on Friday, and the Red Raiders were spurred on by a huge performance from senior Jaylen Butera.  He ran for 339 yards and six touchdowns on offense and added an interception on defense as the Red Raiders defeated Orchard Park 38-27 at Strider Field.  Photo by the Post-Journal

Top right: Aaron Judge slides in to score the winning run for the New York Yankees in the bottom of the 11th inning against the Baltimore Orioles on Friday.  Judge scored on a single by Giancarlo Stanton to lead off the inning to give the Bronx Bombers a 4-3 victory at Yankee Stadium.  New York remains in the American League's first wild card spot, but is still 6 1/2 games behind Tampa Bay in the AL East race.  Photo by USA Today

Bottom left: Virginia Tech delivered college football's first big upset of the 2021 season on Friday.  Hokies quarterback Braxton Burmeister threw for 169 yards and a touchdown and also ran for a score as his team defeated 10th-ranked North Carolina 17-10.  Photo by Virginia Tech

Bottom right: Former world number one women's tennis player Naomi Osaka is out of the U.S. Open, and maybe for some time down the road as well.  On Friday, Osaka got upset by unseeded Canadian Leylah Fernandez in three sets.  Osaka, who pulled out of the French Open and Wimbledon earlier this year due to mental health concerns, said in her post-match press conference that she may take a break from playing "for a while."  Photo by USA Today
