Sunday Sports Update -- September 5, 2021

Fredonia holds off Olean in high school football season opener...upsets galore on the college gridiron...and the Yankees lose more ground in AL East race.  Greg Larson has more details on today's Sunday Sports Update...

Sunday Sports Update

Top: Fredonia began its 2021 high school football season on the right football with a narrow 14-13 win over Olean at the Orange Bowl on Saturday.  Senior quarterback Nick Whitfield (left) threw for 149 yards and a touchdown and also ran for a touchdown in the win.  Meanwhile, the Hillbillies made several key defensive plays throughout the game, including three sacks to snuff out Olean drives that went deep into Fredonia territory.  Whitfield and Shawn Farnham combined on one of those sacks (right) in the 3rd quarter.  Images by Greg Larson

Bottom left: New York Yankees closer Aroldis Chapman has had a very up-and-down season.  On Saturday, the down side was on display, as Chapman had a wild pitch and gave up a hit, a walk, and the go-ahead sacrifice fly in the top of the 9th inning as the Yankees dropped a 4-3 decision to the Baltimore Orioles.  The loss dropped New York to 7 1/2 games back of Tampa Bay atop the American League East and reduced the team's lead over Boston for the first American League wild card spot to just a half-game.  Photo by USA Today

Bottom right: Jessica Pegula's U.S. Open run is over.  On Saturday, the Buffalo native and daughter of Bills co-owners Terry and Kim Pegula, lost her 3rd-round match in New York City to Belinda Bencic in straight sets.  Earlier this year, Pegula reached the 3rd round of the French Open and the quarterfinals of the Australian Open.  Photo by USA Today
