Saturday Sports Update

Top: High school basketball season tipped off in Section VI this week, with many local teams hitting the hardwood.  On Friday, Dunkirk routed Gowanda 84-49 in its season opener behind a 29-point performance from junior Lorenzo Lewis (left) in his varsity debut.  21 of Lewis' points came in the first half, including a slam dunk in the 2nd quarter.  Meanwhile, Silver Creek got 28 points and 14 rebounds from sophomore Ray Cortez (right) and a near triple-double from Matthew Woleben (17 points, 10 rebounds, nine steals) as the Black Knights defeated Eden 68-54 to improve to 2-0.  Images by Gowanda Central School and Silver Creek Central School

Bottom left: The Buffalo Sabres' newest acquisition participated in his first practice with his new team on Friday.  The Sabres acquired goalie Malcolm Subban in a trade with the Chicago Blackhawks on Thursday.  The move was made to shore up some depth at the position after Dustin Tokarski was placed in the NHL's COVID-19 protocol and Craig Anderson now being considered month-to-month with an upper body injury.

Bottom right: Devin Lloyd scores a touchdown on a 34-yard interception return for Utah in the 1st quarter of Friday's Pac-12 Championship Game in Las Vegas.  The Utes, ranked 17th in this week's CFP rankings, went on to rout 10th-ranked Oregon by a 38-10 score to kick off college football's championship weekend.  Photo by the University of Utah
