Saturday Sports Update
Top: An instant classic. 10 innings of high school softball played over the course of two days. Fredonia, which had lost to Eden in each of the last two seasons in the Section VI Class B-2 championship game, finally got over the hump on Friday with a 3-2 win for its first sectional softball title since 2015. Jordan Lucas (left) had three hits, including a two-run double, during Thursday night's action at Williamsville North. After the scene shifted to Gowanda on Friday, Sarah Davis (right) scored the decisive run in the top of the 10th inning when Jaelyn Davis beat a throw from Eden shortstop Lydia Kobie for a two-out infield single. Bottom left: The New York Yankees have had rock solid pitching all season long, and Friday was no exception. Jameson Taillon pitched eight shutout innings, allowing only two hits in a 2-0 win over the Tampa Bay Rays. The Yankees currently have a team ERA of 2.91 this season, which is ranked third in Major League Baseball behind only the Los Angeles Dodgers and Houston Astros. Photo by USA Today
Bottom right: Buffalo native Jessica Pegula is through to the second week of action at this year's French Open. Pegula, who is the number 11 seed in the women's draw at Roland-Garros, defeated 2021 semifinalist Tamara Zidansek in straight sets today to advance to Round 4 on the red clay. Photo by Roland-Garros
