Saturday Sports Update
Top left: High school football is back, and most teams in Section VI got their first taste of game action for the new season on Friday. Gowanda and Silver Creek were among the local teams who took the field, as they squared off in a non-league contest in Gowanda. The Panthers led 8-6 at halftime and went on to win 24-6. Other local teams who came out on top on Friday included Chautauqua Lake-Westfield-Brocton and Falconer-Cassadaga-Valley-Maple Grove. Photo by Kourtney Almeida
Top right: At this time last week, the New York Yankees appeared to have gotten back on track with a five-game winning streak. But since then, the Bronx Bombers have lost five of their last six contests, including a 9-0 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays on Friday, which cuts their lead atop the American League East to five game. And to make matters worse for the Yanks, left fielder Andrew Benintendi -- who has been one of the team's better hitters during the slump -- left the game with a wrist injury during a plate appearance in the 3rd inning. Williams, who announced her retirement from tennis earlier this month, lost her 3rd-round match to Australian Alja Tomljanovic in three sets on Friday. Bottom right: The Buffalo Sabres will be turning the clock back this season...well, at least for a dozen games. The Sabres announced this week that they will be adding a retro black-and-red third jersey to their uniform set for the upcoming NHL season. It will feature a modified version of the bison head, shown here, that regular donned the Sabres' uniforms from 1996 to 2006.
