Sunday Sports Update

Top: A rematch of a playoff game from last year produced similar results on Saturday, as Fredonia opened its high school football season with a 34-13 victory over Akron at the Orange Bowl.  Ethan Fry (left), who served as the backup quarterback to Nick Whitfield last season, showed that he more than capable of leading the Billies' offense.  The senior threw for 121 yards and a touchdown and also ran for 140 yards and three scores in the winning effort.  Meanwhile, senior Micah Davis (right) led the Billies in rushing.  After a slow start, he finished strong with 16 carries for 160 yards and a touchdown, with 132 of his yards coming in the second half.  Photos by Greg Larson

Bottom left: About the only bright spot remaining for the New York Yankees is Aaron Judge.  On a team that has looked anemic at the plate over the past several weeks, Judge has continued to play well.  On Saturday, he went 2-for-4, including his 52nd home run of the year.  However, the Yankees managed only three hits as a team and lost to the Tampa Bay Rays 2-1, trimming their lead in the American League East to four games.  Photo by USA Today

Bottom right: Jessica Pegula will be continuing her U.S. Open run into next week.  On Saturday, the Buffalo native and number 8 seed in the women's draw defeated Yue Yuan in three sets to advance to Round 4 of the fourth and final Grand Slam event of the tennis season.  Her next opponent will be Petra Kvitova, a two-time Grand Slam champion.  Photo by the U.S. Tennis Association
